Welcome to the Basin Harbor Blog!

Cold!

Greetings from Basin Harbor -

The January thaw has ended and cold weather has  returned to Vermont.  As we look forward to a week of temperatures predominately  in the single digits or less, it’s interesting to note that the Lake froze over (in the narrows where we are) during this week in 2000, 2005 and 2011 (and undoubtedly other years but we weren’t keeping track back then).  There was no permanent ice in 2006, 2010 and 2012, a sure sign of global warming.  Bob Beach, Sr., now 93, said that he can’t recall a single year when ice failed to form prior to 2006.

We used to “harvest” ice for use in the summer, back before the 50s.  The old ice house was located adjacent to the Harbor Store, built into the hill so the bottom half was below ground.  Large blocks of ice – 2 to 3 feet square – were cut from the Harbor, hauled up and put into the building with thick layers of sawdust to insulate them so they would last well into the summer months.  When technology made it possible to make ice with machines, a long time guest said that was all well and good but she’d miss that wild ice.

A thick layer of ice on the Lake long ago meant easier transportation for goods .  It is said that as many as 20 teams of oxen and their people would stop for a respite from the cold on a winter’s night, back when the Homestead was a tavern.  That is probably one of the reasons why there were a series of barns on what is now the Homestead lawn, visible in the old photographs in the computer room of the Champlain Lounge.

In more recent memory, ice fishing was a really big deal for many local residents who weren’t necessarily skiers or snowmobilers (and long before anyone was enjoying those winter activites).  It was a fine way for folks to supplement their larders and provide some companionship as well.  There might be 50 or more ice shanties on the ice just off the shore at Basin Harbor (and many other locations where there was easy access to the Lake).  The shanties were little cabins with two, four or even six holes in the floor, where the ice would be cut to allow access, and you could fish in the comfort of an enclosed space.  Most had kerosene heaters to take the chill off.  Cars would fill the Homestead parking lot and then begin to line Basin Harbor Road.  Some years many people would park on the surface of the Harbor itself, depending on how much snow was on the ice, mostly after we had stopped harvesting it.  One of Bob’s dogs, Tonic, the Irish setter, became very adept at stealing the lunches of the hapless fishermen and women!

Fewer people seem to be going out to fish on the ice – when it’s there, but a lot of them are interested in whether or not the ice has formed.  We’ll have lots of traffic this week, people checking the status of the ice.  So stay tuned and we’ll let you know how the fishing is.  Smelt and perch are the fish of choice.

Aside from waiting for the ice to form, we’re busy with all sorts of projects!  Executive Chef Chris Kruse is busy putting the finishing touches on the 2013 season’s menus.  The work continues in the Ranger Room, and the maintenance staff is combing through cottages  to make needed repairs and painting.  The Sales and Reservations people are waiting for your calls and emails, so please make sure to keep them busy!

Best wishes from your Basin Harbor Family – stay warm!  Pennie

Happy You-Know-What

Greetings to one and all -

It seems as if winter as we once knew it is back again – grey, snowy last day of the year, good skiing in the mountains, and very hungry birds at the feeders (the dry summer months led to a dearth of berries and seeds so you can hardly blame them for their feeding frenzy).

2012 has been a good year for us – lots of sunny days meant the golf course was in the best shape ever.  North Dock events were able to be outside where they belonged for all but two nights.  34 couples celebrated their marriage at BHC.  The gardens were quite wonderful. Hurricane Sandy was a non-event.  Although Lake Champlain was at an almost record low, it was a great boating season.  The staff did an awesome job taking good care of guests.  The first Fifth Generation family member joined the staff.  We expanded our partnerships with Vermont farmers and growers.  We’re grateful that so many guests chose to be here – thank you!

And on to thoughts of 2013.  The wedding circle and Homestead gardens were created 75 years ago this year so we’ve undertaken a restoration project to recreate the pergola that once ringed the West half of the verde antique marble circle.  We’ll do some regrading to make the Homestead lawn more even and improve the seating options at the circle.

The Town Hall, the building housing the Ranger Room, was the barn for the Basin Harbor farm that Ardelia purchased in 1882.  The Ranger Room level once housed Jersey cows, then the BHC laundry facility, while the space upstairs went from hay mow to dance hall and snack bar.  In 1958, our town voted “wet” (we were a hold out from Prohibition days), and A. P. Beach created the Ranger Room bar and buffet in the lower level of the Town Hall.  The name was in recognition of Robert Rogers, hero of the French and Indian War, whose troops were called Rogers’ Rangers (if you’re a history buff, do read War on the Run by John F. Ross).  All the cherry wood of the bar, A. P.’ s favorite lumber, was milled here. The bar was created across the way from the Dining Room because Grandma Beach (yup, the eponymous maker of the famed dessert) didn’t want to have to walk through a cocktail lounge on the way into dinner.  It would be two more years before alcohol would be served in the Main Dining Room.

But I digress – The Ranger Room is undergoing some renovations to open it up from the bar side of the room.  In uncovering the original support beams of the building, we have come across the signatures of several people who worked in the laundry in the late 40s.  Stay tuned for further updates on the project, and be prepared for a new look.

The Lobby and Champlain Lounge will have a face lift as well, and several cottages will feature a new look for the new year.  The winter is so short when there are multiple projects in the works!

The Reservations and Sales people have been very busy since we closed last October.  Many wedding parties have visited to make plans for 2013, and many family reunions will gather to celebrate special dates.  We hope you’ll include us in your plans for the coming warm months!

All of us here at BHC join in sending you our best wishes for a healthy, joyous New Year.  We wouldn’t be here without you, and we’re very grateful for your support.  Cheers!  Pennie

Christmas Cookies. A Baker’s Dozen.

Being a three season resort has its pros and cons. We really enjoy the respite of the winter months, where the daily routine is dog walking, dog dodging and office chatter. It’s all about the planning and the looking ahead. Thinking sun and fun in the frozen surroundings of the lake, all the while praying for snow. One of the things I miss the most I think is being able to decorate for Christmas. Sharing the beauty of Christmas with our guests and dressing up the Lodge and other buildings with evergreen and ribbons, winter berry and glitter.

So we/I compensate by baking Christmas cookies and playing Christmas carols all day long. Our 12 Days of Cookies series, by no means an original idea, is a wonderful outlet for us to reach out and touch our guests. Today, we are sharing a classic and the 13th recipe of the year. Jerry from the Golf Shop made these for our annual Christmas party and they were delish.

If you want to jump in on the rest of the cookie emails, sign up here. Visit our website for the past two years recipes. Merry Christmas and many happy nibblings! ~ Jen

2.Shape peanut butter mixture into 1 inch balls, placing them on a baking sheet covered with waxed paper.
3.Let balls stand for 20 minutes until dry.
4.Melt the dipping chocolate or confectioners’ coating.
5.Drop balls one at a time in melted chocolate.

9.Store tightly covered in a cool dry place

Closing Up, Battening Down

After a wonderful 126th year, BHC is now closed for the season.  If you missed Rocktoberfest on October 20, you won’t want to next year!  This beer, bacon and bands extravaganza was truly fun for all and Mother Nature gave us a lovely evening (after all that rain), and while it was muddy under foot, there were smiles all around.

Thank you guests and staff for a truly memorable year.  The summer had some of the best weather ever – only two inside calls for the North Dock events!  The gardens were resplendent, the golf course has never been in better shape, and although the water was low, Lake Champlain gave many hours of fun to all comers.

And now we’re waiting for Sandy.  Did you know that Bobby has a cat named Sandy?  The other Sandy won’t be coming in on little cat feet for sure.  The good news is that most of the leaves are off the trees.  We hope there isn’t any bad news . . . stay tuned.  And for all those of you who are out there with the storm bearing down, stay safe – seek shelter and do what the authorities tell you to do!  We’ll be thinking of you.

Best wishes from your Basin Harbor Family – Pennie

The Ultimate Family Reunion at Basin Harbor

Family is family, they say, no matter how much time or distance gets in between.

Last week, Basin Harbor hosted a “family” of 185 girl scouts for their Button Bay Roundup Reunion, a gathering commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the scouts’ original Roundup back in 1962. The ’62 gathering brought together 10,000 girl scouts and girl guides from all over the world for two weeks of camping and activities in a large field south of Basin Harbor (which became Button Bay State Park shortly after). For many of the attendees, now in their sixties, this was the first time back to the area since then, and the first time in 50 years seeing some of their friends from the Roundup.

And what a reunion! The ladies (and a few accompanying husbands in the mix) were kept busy, attending art and craft classes, nature walks, lake cruises, kayak treks, sightseeing bus tours, cocktail hours, and general fellowship. While some were seen relaxing in Adirondack chairs, the gals seemed very active, harboring the energy of their girl scouts youths. One of the oldest attendees in her 80s, Marj, managed to pack in a drawing class, lap-swimming in the pool, and a dulcimer practice session on the deck all before lunch!

The food at Basin Harbor, of course, was a big hit with the scouts as they enjoyed three gourmet square meals a day—a considerable step up in quality, of course, from the mess hall camp meals they remembered receiving 50 years ago. The ladies admitted that they were thrilled to be staying in Basin Harbor’s luxurious accommodations at this point in their lives, compared to the rustic setup in the field at Button Bay, though many of them had been back to camp at the state park since the Roundup. The ladies were in good humor, recounting their shared memories about what it was like at the gathering in ‘62. One story that came up multiple times with a chuckle was the “open air shower” scenario. Although the makeshift camp showers had curtains around them, the tops were exposed to the elements—and exposed to the rascally Army pilots flying around in helicopters overhead!

The most memorable thing about having the scouts on hand at Basin Harbor, for the staff, was the singing! In fact, song seemed to erupt from all corners of the resort at any given time—with every meal, during the evening gatherings, around the campfires, or even just out in the parking lot. The scouts remembered every word to each of their familiar old tunes. Beyond the singing, BHC employees appreciated the generosity extended by the group as they shared stories, offered an open invitation to their campfires and singalongs, and even gifted out their “shares”—homemade pins, brooches, and necklaces they had created in advance to give away. Those who had the chance to chat with these accomplished women (and honorary husband scouts) were treated to stories of life beyond the scouts: cross-country moves, global travels, Tennessee BBQ competitions, overcoming struggles with fibromyalgia, Nebraska living, and many more inspiring tales.

The Button Bay Roundup Reunion of 2012 represented the epitome of a family gathering that Basin Harbor is proud to facilitate. The group made full use of the resort’s spacious facilities and grounds, meeting areas and services. The resulting smiles upon departure were evidence of another successful reunion, complete with fond memories, reflections, and an unbridled sense of fun and togetherness.

Basin Harbor Club thanks the Girl Scouts for bringing their smiles and laughter to our little world!
