The weekend might bring some rain and cloudy skies our way, especially on Sunday, but skies are likely to clear up and stay that way for the rest of the week. Afternoon temperatures will range from low 60s earlier in the week to mid 70s by Thursday.

Shaker Heights, OH brings Mr. & Mrs. Calvin Kovell and Nancy Worman to our neck of the woods, while David Valentine travels our way from Valatie, NY. Schroon Lake, NY seems to have sent its entire population to Basin Harbor, with visits from Carmine Decker, Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Coppola, Bill & Barbara Casey, Anthony & Margot Bartolomeo, Fred Flemming, Charles & Nancy Harste, Tom Ringrose, and Judy Sheridan. Lynn Schmidt from Severance, NY is here this week, as well as Dave Schmidt from Westport, NY. Lynn McClure of Brant Lake, NY joins us, in addition to Marc Porter from Gansevoort, NY. Congratulations to Burlington love birds, Becky Kenison and Kyle Brault, who will be getting hitched at BHC on Saturday! We welcome friends and family of our Bride and Groom, gathering for wedding festivities all weekend. Basin Harbor is honored to host such a special celebration for the happy couple. Cheers!
It has been feeling like Fall around Basin Harbor for several weeks now, but this weekend marks the official change of season! As the leaves begin to show their colors, celebrate the Autumnal Equinox with complimentary apple cider (hot or cold!) and our signature maple shortbread cookies in the Champlain Lounge from 3-5 every day. Enjoy a fresh-picked Honeycrisp or Macintosh apple from our apple bin in the lobby, or take your own adventure to one of the nearby apple orchards to pick your own peck and partake of Vermont’s famous cider donuts. Try Shelburne Orchards just south of Burlington or Boyer’s Orchard in nearby Monkton.
Turtle Power! Back in the spring, Basin Harbor witnessed a mass nesting of snapping turtles, from roadsides to gravel parking lots to golf course sand traps, and now our babies have hatched! Keep an eye out for these little 1-2 inch reptiles all over property, trying to find their way to the water. If you see a baby snapper on the road, feel free to gently usher it toward the lake or swamp, mindful of the fragile state of young turtle shells. Keep in mind that these animals each lay a clutch of 20-40 eggs, and not all are meant to survive—can you imagine what BHC would be like with hundreds of giant snapping turtles roaming the premises? In other wildlife news, there is a moose on the loose! A very, very rare appearance by a male moose with a full rack has been reported on BHC grounds by our own Bob Beach, Jr. How exciting! If you do catch sight of our special guest, be sure to take extra cautions, as these magnificent animals have been known to be temperamental and aggressive.
Basin Harbor’s Blue Chair Day Spa is available on a limited basis this time of year, but we’d love to book a treatment for you! Our masseuse Patti will be available every day this week with the exception of Tuesday for a variety of massages, and Michelle will be available for manicures and pedicures on Thursday. Book your pampering appointments with the concierge!
Enjoy a Narrated Cruise on Lake Champlain aboard The EScape! Sign up with the concierge for our daily cruise and learn all about the wonders and historical significance of our beloved lake.
The Breezeway Gift Shop will be open from 8:30am-Noon on Mon-Thurs and 8:30am-5:00pm on Friday and Saturday. Be sure to stock up on souvenirs, BHC merchandise and other goodies for your trip back home!
Fall Fun on Friday! Friday nights at Basin Harbor are full of excitement, beginning with our S’Mores Bar and campfire on the Sunshine Lawn at 8pm. Then hop on over to the Red Mill for your late-night entertainment, provided by everybody’s favorite bringer-of-good-times, DJ Charlie! Dust off your favorite moves and get ready for a serious Dance Party!
Quote of the Week
“Through the crisp, swirling launch of our recall, memories smile at yesterday’s reply. September guides us gently into Fall, when woods begin to hear chill winter’s call.” ~M. Jo Taylor
